HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOM ALERT

Stay out of Canaan Street Lake and keep your pets out of it, too.

On Friday Oct 27th 2023, New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NH DES) and Canaan Lake Association members tested Canaan Street Lake for Cyanobacteria as part of an ongoing study.

70, 000 cells per mil were found near the northern shore, and there is a visible green scum present in various parts of the lake.

The Department of Public Health has recommended that individuals be advised not to contact the water when a visible scum or mat is present, the total cyanobacteria cell count exceeds 70,000 cells per milliliter of water (cells/ml), or the microcystin (toxin associated with cyanobacteria species) level equals or exceeds 14 parts per billion (ppb).

Nothing of concern was found near the water intake for the Town water supply.

More samples will be collected in the following days until the cell count does not need an alert.
